Special Needs Ministry

A very special community has developed through our Special Needs Ministry.  Beginning with a support group for moms who had children with special needs that include autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, a unique and incredible Respite Care Program now thrives here at Saint Anne’s.  Over 50 children are lovingly cared for every other Friday evening at Respite, while their parents have some time off.  When the program was first conceived, we thought this was the goal of Respite.  Instead, we have seen lives changed as a result.  Not only have our volunteers (both adults and teens) grown in their awareness and understanding, but the special kids themselves have grown unbelievably in their ability to relate to others and to understand that Saint Anne’s is a special place for them where all are truly welcome.

This message is reinforced every month at our Special Needs Masses, where the Eucharist is celebrated with families who have special children.  They are all gathered at the table and made to feel welcome and loved by all, regardless of their disabilities.

Special Needs Masses
The liturgy is where we come together to share the Eucharist as a faith community.  Families with children who have special needs often find it difficult to attend Mass together. Special Needs Masses, scheduled once a month, provide an opportunity to attend Mass in an environment that welcomes all, regardless of any disabilities. All parishioners are invited to attend our special Masses.

Mothers’ Support Group
Mothers who have children with special needs come together once a month to discuss issues and support one another.   Dinners and special events are also planned.

Respite Care Program

Our Respite community meets on Friday evenings, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in McCloskey Auditorium and the cafeteria.  Special needs children are matched, one-to-one, with trained volunteers for an evening of fun and games.  Parents are free to take some ‘time out’ as they choose, and the special children have a wonderful opportunity for socialization and companionship with our caring volunteers, both teens and adults.

Families who wish to participate in the Respite Care Program must register beforehand through Parish Social Ministry at 352-5904 or e-mail lindaleone@stannesgc.org.
